Romans 3:1-2, Stewards of God’s Word

Romans 3:1-2 What advantage then hath the Jew? or what profit is there of circumcision? 2 Much every way: chiefly, because that unto them were committed the oracles of God.

Geographically, the nation of Israel is at the strategic crossroad in the heart of three continents – Asia, Europe, Africa.

Genetically, the Jews were descended from Abraham. God promised Abraham in Genesis 12:2-3 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: 3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed. Her most eminent Son is Jesus Christ, the man of Nazareth, the Son of God. By circumcision, the Jews are identified as God’s covenant people.

Generally, God entrusted His Word to the Jewish people – the Old Testament Scriptures written in the Hebrew language.

God promised Israel that when she would obey and live by His Word, He shall prosper them in their way –  Joshua 1:8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. God said to Moses, Gather the people together so that they can hear His Words and they shall learn to fear Him all their days (Deut. 4:10).

The church is especially favoured by God because she has been entrusted both the Old Testament Scriptures in Hebrew and Aramaic and the New Testament Scriptures in Greek. The Scriptures lead us to know and receive the only Saviour of the world – Jesus Christ, the only way to eternal life. In the New Testament church, by means of baptism, members are identified as God’s covenant people. By the preaching and teaching of the Word, members are grounded and established in the faith. And by the proclamation of the Word far and wide, souls are saved and the truth established in men’s hearts.

May the church of the living God be the pillar and ground of truth wherewith men find salvation and peace and joy with God. May we be true to our calling. May we be good stewards of God’s Word. Amen.
