Lord’s Day, Vol. 3 No. 45

(1) A Timely Poem

Thank God for His special care and protection upon Elder Dr Tow Siang Yeow who turns 88 years old on 6 November 2015. We remember the Lord’s goodness upon him. Sometime ago, Elder Tow wrote a poem on kindness. Prayerfully, the poem, entitled “What is kindness?” would encourage us to be kind one to another.

What is kindness?

“Try a little kindness!”

Singaporeans are kindly urged to do.

But did not Paul in days of yore

Exhort believers

“Be ye kind one to another?”

Easier said than done!

Two millennia have gone!

Yet repeating the same old refrain!

Consider the creatures of the wild,

God’s creation.

By instinct protecting

their young from predators unrelenting?

Consider the lilies of the field

and the birds of the air:

They sow not, neither reap,

yet, of them, God takes gentle care!

James prescribes kindness visiting orphans

and widows in sore trouble.

And even a cup of cold water

offered to an insignificant disciple

is commended by the Lord!

Helping someone in distress daunting,

A word of solace to the grieving

Giving up your bus or MRT seat

to the old and frail with wobbly feet.

Helping the blind

cross the treacherous street

is surely an act most kind!

But greatest of all, kindness is what the Lord

has done on Calvary’s cross:

To shed His blood and give His life for our

iniquity that we may pass through the pearly gates

to enter His eternal, celestial city!

By Elder Tow Siang Yeow

We may recall some Bible verses on kindness.

Ephesians 4:32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.

1 Corinthians 13:1-7 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. 2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. 3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing. 4 Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, 5 Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; 6 Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; 7 Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

Please uphold Mrs Jessie Tow and helper Jean in prayer as they take care of Elder Tow. May the Lord grant them His special grace, strength and blessing!

(2) A Weekly Mission for Every Worshipper

Matthew 5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

Our Lord Jesus pronounces multiple blessings upon everyone who delivers the gospel of peace.

One way in which every worshipper can do so is to share a gospel tract with a friend, a loved one or even a stranger and to give an invitation card to invite someone to church to worship the living and true God.

Three tracts and three invitation cards have been inserted in Blessed Hope BPC’s weekly newsletter to facilitate worshippers to reach out with the gospel during the week.

To go and share the gospel is a simple way of expressing our thanksgiving to the Lord for all the benefits He has bestowed upon us daily.

Psalm 103:1-5 A Psalm of David. Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. 2 Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: 3 Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; 4 Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies; 5 Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

May the testimony of the psalmist energise us in this spiritual endeavour to the glory of God.

Yours lovingly,

Pastor Lek Aik Wee
