Romans 7:23, Secret to Victorious Christian Living
Romans 7:23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.
The indwelling Holy Spirit coupled with the indwelling Word strengthening the mind is the secret of victorious Christian living. The Christian is able to see sin for what it is at all times. He is able to see the spiritual warfare within him and take precaution to protect himself from being brought into captivity to the law of sin which is in his members.
The Apostle Paul testifies earlier, “For I delight in the law of God after the inward man.” (Romans 7:22) How was he able to do so? I believe, he set aside time for private devotion, set aside quiet time with God for the purpose of cultivating a rich spiritual life. The Christian’s quiet time is an appointment with God, that moves him from a state of stress to a state of rest. The cultivation of a calm spirit in the peace and joy of God is the disposition of a man in touch with God. The elements of private devotion are prayer and the reading and meditation of God’s Word. He constantly asks himself, “What is God’s message for me this day?” The quiet time must not deteriorate into a thoughtless routine. It must not take away the excitement and delight of the soul in the pursuit of God. Yet there is a need to have the self-discipline to cultivate a habit of life-long devotion to God.
When we hide God’s Word in our heart, it has a sanctifying effect in us. May we be encouraged to rejoice, meditate and delight in God’s Word and experienced the strength to see and not yield to the law of sin. Amen.
