Romans 8:11, When the Roll Is Called Up Yonder

Romans 8:11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

The believer is made spiritually alive by the Holy Spirit. Although he has the power to overcome sin, he will still experience physical death. The Apostle Paul described the dead in Christ as those who sleep in Christ. In the day of the resurrection, when Jesus returns, God has promised the dead in Christ will be awakened by a physical resurrection of their mortal bodies. And those who are physically alive, during the time of Christ return, will not experience death, but will be clothed with an incorruptible, glorious, resurrection body.

He wrote of this momentous event in  1 Corinthians 15:51-57 Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. 53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. 54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. 55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? 56 The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

The hymn “When the Roll Is Called Up Yonder” described this glory to come:

When the trumpet of the Lord shall sound and time shall be no more,

And the morning breaks eternal, bright and fair –

When the saved of earth shall gather over the other shore,

And the roll is called up yonder I’ll be there!
