Romans 8:-15, His Very Own
Romans 8:15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
A true child of God is led by the Holy Spirit. A true child of God is adopted into the family of God by the Holy Spirit. He address God the Father by a term of endearment – Abba. It signifies closeness, it suggest intimacy. When a child is legally adopted by his foster parents, he receives the legal rights of inheritance and the position of being a son or a daughter to the parent.
When we come to God through Jesus Christ, we are freed from the bondage of sin, “the spirit of bondage”. Fear no longer characterise the emotional state of the child of God. He receives solace and comfort and help for his need when he calls upon his Father in heaven. He no longer live in fear but dwells in safety under the protective care of his heavenly Father.
Such is the emotional state of every child of God. He is no longer an orphan but an adopted child. Hence, he receives all the legal benefits of an heir. This is the great privilege of being a child of God. Jesus articulated this privilege well in Matthew 7:7-11 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: 8 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. 9 Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? 10 Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent? 11 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?
Dr Raymond Saxe taught this chorus “His Very Own” for our spiritual edification:
His very own.
His very own.
Wonderful grace in His Word is made known.
Chosen by the Father,
Purchased by the Son,
Sealed by the Spirit,
I’m His very own.
May the Lord bless these words to our hearts. Amen.
