Romans 8:34, Continual Intercession!
Romans 8:34 (KJV) 34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.
The first work Jesus did on earth when He died upon the cross and was raised in glory from the dead after three days. Jesus is Saviour. The second work Jesus carries on in heaven after His ascension to heaven, at the right hand of God the Father – Jesus is Intercessor. This second work He carries on and accomplishes solely and entirely on behalf of His own elect, His people, His servants, and His children.
Hebrews 1:3 …when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;
How does our Lord Jesus Christ carry on this work? How shall we comprehend and grasp what is the meaning of Christ’s intercession?
Hebrews 7:25 Wherefore He is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing He ever liveth to make intercession for them.
Hebrews 7:25 tells us of the nature of that continual intercession which Christ ever lives to make is on behalf of His believing people. In ancient Israel, the Levitical priests had to succeed one another because they kept dying, as one generation comes, another goes, time and tide waits for no man. But Jesus Christ needs no successor because He will not die. The fact that Christ will not die and need replacement by another priest means that He can see His work of delivering His people through to the end. He can deliver us completely (better than “forever,” v. 25) in the sense of seeing us through to the realization of our full salvation, our rest (inheritance) in God’s presence.
This is the overarching thought that the Apostle Paul brings to us. Jesus’ care for us is exceedingly sufficient. He will see us through long’s journey triumphantly. He will save us to the uttermost. What a wonderful Saviour!
