Romans 11:30, Having Obtained Mercy
Romans 11:30 For as ye in times past have not believed God, yet have now obtained mercy through their unbelief:
The Apostle Paul urged his readers to realize that they are no better sinners than the Jewish people who rejected their Christ. He came to this understanding as he recalled who is was before his conversion. But for God’s grace, he would suffer utter condemnation for his misdeeds.
1 Timothy 1:13-14 “Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. 14 And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.”
In experiencing God’s mercy, he learns to give leeway to the Jews and not write off and condemned them to irrevocable judgment by his self-righteousness. He urged his readers to consider their previous lost condition and how God’s grace brought them to where they are as privileged partakers of the spiritual riches in Christ.
Having obtained mercy, he urged them to take care to watch their hearts lest they fall into spiritualĀ pride . He persuades them to keep themselves humble and thankful for the great grace of God that came upon them. Amen.
