1 Corinthians 4:10, Fools for Christ’s Sake

1 Corinthians 4:10 We are fools for Christ’s sake, but ye are wise in Christ; we are weak, but ye are strong; ye are honourable, but we are despised.

The Apostles of Jesus Christ suffered much persecution for Christ’s sake. They willingly suffered fools that the gospel might be proclaimed and souls saved. He contrasted their suffering with the high honour that the Corinthian Christians seemed to be enjoying.

The Apostle Paul is pleading that the Corinthian Christians may humble themselves and think soberly concerning their lost estate and come back to God by realising their foolishness and repenting of their self-conceit. Romans 12:3 well explains his heart-cry, “For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.”

Indeed, the Christian demeanour is characterised by a poverty of spirit and a mourning for sins. May this mind of Christ be formed in us. Amen.
