1 Corinthians 5:7, A New Lump

1 Corinthians 5:7 Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:

The word “purge” means to “cleanse thoroughly”. Sin is to be rid, nipped in the bud. As the Apostle John exhorted God’s people in  1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” The new lump is rid of the old leaven.

Let God’s people be willing deal with sin as the psalmist cried in Psalm 51:7-8 “Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.” This is a prayer for the cleansing of sin that will bring rejoicing to the heart again. The church in Corinth is urged by the Apostle Paul not to take sin lightly but seriously to deal with sin for their spiritual wellbeing. Do not procrastinate but be willing to take action.

The church in Galatia was entangled with sin. The Apostle Paul similarly had to point out that they have been freed from the bondage of sin through the gospel and yet going back to the filth of sin –  Galatians 5:1 Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.

May God be gracious to sanctify His people Amen.
