1 Corinthians 9:14, Live of the Gospel
1 Corinthians 9:14 Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel.
The Apostle Paul teaches here the support of God’s servants engaged in the work of preaching the gospel.
Barnes said well, “… they should have such a maintenance as to constitute a livelihood. They should be made comfortable, not rich. They should receive so much as to keep their minds from being harassed with cares, and their families from want; not so much as to lead them to forget their dependence on God, or on the people. Probably the true rule is, that they should be able to live as the mass of the people among whom they labour live; that they should be able to receive and entertain the poor, and be willing to do it; and so that the rich also may not despise them, or turn away from their dwelling.”
Under the terms of the Holy Scripture and the Bible-Presbyterian Form of Government, members of a Bible Presbyterian Church, may make a call for a pastor, being on sufficient grounds, well satisfied of his ministerial qualifications and having good hopes that his ministrations in the Gospel will be profitable to their spiritual interests, do earnestly call and desire the incumbent to undertake the pastoral office would promise in the discharge of their duty all proper support (including material support that he may be free from worldly care and avocations), encouragement, and obedience in the Lord.
May the Lord bless the gospel ministry and those of His servants in this generation. Amen.
