1 Corinthians 11:20-22, Despise Ye the Church of God
1 Corinthians 11:20-22 When ye come together therefore into one place, this is not to eat the Lord’s supper. For in eating every one taketh before other his own supper: and one is hungry, and another is drunken. What? have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or despise ye the church of God, and shame them that have not? What shall I say to you? shall I praise you in this? I praise you not.
Some of the Corinthian Christians were coming together for a time of feasting in the church bringing food and drinking and there was also drunkenness. The food they brought were not shared with others and neglecting the needs of others in the church, thus despising the church of God, these ones selfishly enjoyed their wanton feasting. And in the midst of all the revelry, the Lord’s Supper was served.
The Lord’s Supper is a solemn occasion instituted by the Lord to remember His suffering and death to win our redemption. It was a time of self-examination, self-searching and prayer.
There can be fellowship meals among believers, they may do so at home is the advice. By bringing their feasting to the church, they have not observed the sanctity accorded to God’s house. In fact, they have disturbed the peace and sanctity of the house of God by their selfish behaviour.
May God be gracious to preserve the purity, peace and sanctity of His house. Amen.
