1 Corinthians 14:1, That Ye May Prophesy
1 Corinthians 14:1 Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.
There are two commands issued. Firstly, “follow” or “pursue” after charity with an earnest and fervent spirit to practice unconditional and sacrificial love. Secondly, it is coupled with the “desire” or “zeal for” exercising their spiritual gifts. All spiritual gifts were to be exercised with God’s love so that it will benefit the body.
“To prophesy” speaks of the preaching and expounding God’s Word to declare God’s will for the edification, and exhortation, and comfort (1 Corinthians 14:3) of God’s people. It involves rebuking of sin and speaking out or foretelling divinely imparted knowledge of future events. It strengthens and builds up the faith of God’s people. Rather, be willing to grow through the imbibing of God’s Word through sound declaration of God’s Word.
MacArthur observed well, “And particularly they should have followed after prophecy. Especially that “ye may prophesy” is a plural form, indicating not that individuals should desire to prophesy but that the whole church should desire that gift to be used in their assembly.”
May the Lord bless the faithful preaching of His Word for the strengthening of His saints. Amen.
