Proverbs 15:3, Thou God Seest Me!
September 10, Proverbs 15:3
Hebrews 4 “The eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth” (2 Chr. 16:9).
Thou God Seest Me!
The eyes of the Lord are in every place, beholding the evil and the good (15:3). “Thou God seest me.” It was Hagar, who, in her desperate plight, so named the God who found her by the well and asked her, Whither wilt thou go?
1. The Defender: This word beholding is the root for the nouns watchman and watchtower. The verb is translated keep watch (Gn. 31:49; Ps. 66:9), or watches (Ps. 37:32). In Pr. 31:27, the virtuous woman looketh well to (watches) the ways of her household. How beautifully this describes the watching of the Lord, caring for and defending, His own! God does not need the opinion of others. He has immediate and complete knowledge of all things. He needs no spy-network to brief Him. His counsel is direct and without any intermediaries (Rom. 11:34). He is the Omniscient One, and His understanding is perfect!
2. The Discoverer: His Eye is in every place. A London cockney newspaper lad was asked by a clergyman, “Can you tell me where God is and I’ll give you a shilling?” “Blimy, Guv’nr, you tells me where ‘e ain’t an’ I’ll give you two!” You may not know the cockney English, but do get the point! Out of the mouth of babes comes this profound truth: Wherever we are, His eyes are! There are no secret hiding places from Him! The Psalmist knew that he was shut up to, discovered by, God. He asks, Whither shall I go from thy spirit? Or whither shall I flee from thy presence? The darkness and the light are both alike to thee. Read again Psalm 139:7-12, 21, to realise the scope of God’s eye!
3. The Discerner: God beholds both the evil and the good. He is the discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart (Mal. 3:18; Heb. 4:12, 13). In our sinful world there is no third option, is there? It matters not if it is evil by a king or pauper, whether in a palace or some dark den, whether open or secret sin, God knows it all (Isa. 29:15; Jer. 16:16-17). Mad are those who think they can hide the truth from God. This is the secret, but false hope, of atheism. Let the wicked then be warned (Eccl. 8:11; 11:9). “They wish there might be no Witness of their sins, no Searcher of their hearts, no Judge of their deeds” (A.W. Pink). Delay, there may be, O sinner, but righteous judgment of God is coming. Then let the godly take heart. Ps. 37:32 suggests that the wicked are spying on the righteous, but our God does not need to do that. Read the concluding verses of the Psalm (Ps. 37:33-40). This puts things in their true perspective. What a blessing that the final judgment is not with our peers but with our Peerless, all-seeing God, who discerns things as they are, and makes no mistakes! Charnock said: “He fills hell with his severity, heaven with his glory, his people with his grace.” Every person has to have dealings with God, therefore, Prepare to meet thy God! Let that fear of God be a holy fear!
Thought: “The power of man can never reverse the sentence of God” (Thms. Moore).
Prayer: “His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.”
