Lord’s Day, Vol. 6 No. 41
If the Foundations Be Destroyed!
The psalmist cried out in Psalm 11:3 “3If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do? ”(Ps. 11:3 KJV)
On 25 September 2018, I read with great trepidation on the Straits Times “Opinion” page Professor Tommy Koh’s article “Section 377A: Science, Religion and the law” what seemed to be a public appeal to repeal Section 377A of the Singapore law.
As a citizen of Singapore and a Christian pastor, I felt the urgent need to give a response because the very structure of the family consisting of father, mother and children coming out of that blessed union is about to be overturned. I write to emphatically emphasize that this societal order from time immemorial must not be compromised.
As a Singapore citizen, I will exercise my right to vote against the repealing of section 377A of our constitution. I hereby state my case.
As an engineer by training, as a rational, thinking person, I reject his appeal to my rationality that “scientific research has shown that homosexuality is a normal and natural variation in human sexuality and is not in itself a source of negative psychological effects. They also believe that there is insufficient evidence to support psychological intervention to change sexual orientation.”
In fact, there is overwhelming evidence of the great harm homosexual behaviour does to a person which is the reason for Section 377, a legislation that criminalised sex “against the order of nature”.
As a Christian pastor, I understand there are the cities where Section 377A was non-existent or repealed. It was the ancient city of Sodom and Gomorrah. Those cities were destroyed when fire and brimstones fell from heaven in 1845 B.C. (Genesis 19). I believe it was a sobering lesson for mankind when they saw the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah where the word “sodomy” or “unnatural sex” finds its origin. God judged those cities.
The psalmist rightly declared this truth –
6Upon the wicked he shall rain snares, fire and brimstone, and an horrible tempest: this shall be the portion of their cup.(Ps. 11:6 KJV)
Some 300 years later, God gave the law to Moses at Mount Sinai that provides for us the origin of this law in section 377A.
Leviticus 18:22 Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.
Leviticus 20:13 If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.
Singapore law is inherited from Indian law, and Indian law from British law, British law from the Roman law and Roman law from God’s law as articulated in the Bible.
It would be frightening to live in a city awaiting God’s judgment for repealing His good law! No doubt, there are many cities in the world where this law has been successfully repealed. May Singapore not follow such a lawless trend!
If homosexuality and lesbianism are condoned, our society can self-destruct in one generation. It is frightening to open our national newspaper to read an article that calls evil, good and good, evil. Especially when it pertains to going against the law of the land.
2For, lo, the wicked bend their bow, they make ready their arrow upon the string, that they may privily shoot at the upright in heart.(Ps. 11:2 KJV)
I uttered a prayer to the Lord after reading the article and trust that He knows the state of affairs how Singapore society should evolve.
4The LORD is in his holy temple, the LORD’S throne is in heaven: his eyes behold, his eyelids try, the children of men. 5The LORD trieth the righteous: but the wicked and him that loveth violence his soul hateth.(Ps. 11:4-5 KJV)
I was heartened to read Attorney-General Lucien Wong’s timely response of the Government’s position 7 days later on 2 October
2018 with this media statement: “Singapore’s Government has not removed prosecutorial discretion for Section 377A, and the Public Prosecutor retains “full prosecutorial discretion” … The law has recently come into the spotlight, with calls to repeal it made by members of the “Ready4Repeal” movement as well as prominent figures such as veteran diplomat Professor Tommy Koh … The Public Prosecutor’s exercise of prosecutorial discretion has always been, and remains, unfettered.”
Indeed, the Lord has heard the cries of His people – “5The LORD trieth the righteous: but the wicked and him that loveth violence his soul hateth.”(Ps. 11:5 KJV) Also, “7For the righteous LORD loveth righteousness; his countenance doth behold the upright.”(Ps. 11:7 KJV)
We are reminded by the push for LGBTQ lifestyle worldwide that we are living in the days of Lot wherein our Lord’s return is nigh: 28Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded; 29But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all. 30Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed. (Lk. 17:28-30 KJV)
Let us live by the grace of God a life of sobriety, in righteousness and godliness, as we await our Lord’s return – “11For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, 12Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; 13Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;”(Tit. 2:11-13 KJV)
Let us pray for those in authority to uphold this law and that we may peaceably and quietly serve our generation – “I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; 2For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.”(1 Tim. 2:1-2 KJV) May the Lord help us. Amen.
Yours lovingly,
Pastor Lek Aik Wee
