2 Corinthians 4:7; This Treasure in Earthen Vessel

2 Corinthians 4:7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.

The word “treasure” means “storehouse”. The believer is a most valued storehouse for the glorious message of the gospel. The Holy Spirit will use the human instrument for the proclamation of the gospel to the salvation and edification of souls. The hymn, “We’ve a Story to Tell” described well the excellency of the power of God flowing through a surrendered vessel in the proclamation of the gospel.

  1. We’ve a story to tell to the nations,
That shall turn their hearts to the right,
A story of truth and mercy,
A story of peace and light,
A story of peace and light.

    • Refrain:
For the darkness shall turn to dawning,
      And the dawning to noonday bright;
And Christ’s great kingdom shall come on earth,
The kingdom of love and light.
  2. We’ve a song to be sung to the nations,
That shall lift their hearts to the Lord,
A song that shall conquer evil
And shatter the spear and sword,
And shatter the spear and sword.
  3. We’ve a message to give to the nations,
That the Lord who reigns up above
Has sent us His Son to save us
And show us that God is love,
And show us that God is love.
  4. We’ve a Savior to show to the nations,
Who the path of sorrow has trod,
That all of the world’s great peoples
Might come to the truth of God,
Might come to the truth of God.

The believer has a transitory existence on earth, being each cast in a mortal body. In the hands of God, such a vessel can be used mightily for the supernatural work of ushering men and women from hell to be on the way to heaven. Indeed, we are the privileged people to proclaim the glorious message that “Only Jesus Saves” to a despairing and depressed world.

May we have the same conviction as our writer, the Apostle Paul, who testified in Romans 1:16 “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.” Amen.
