Revelation 2:14; A Few Things Against Thee

Revelation 2:14 But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication.

It is sobering to hear our sins pointed out to us. What must be our response when our sins are pointed out?

May we not resist but repent. Resisting God brings no peace to the soul as David testifies in Psalm 32:3-4 When I kept silence, my bones waxed old through my roaring all the day long. For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me: my moisture is turned into the drought of summer. Selah.

Silence communicates. The “silence” here expresses the emotion, the attitude of resisting God. Roaring is the human cry of distress. The torment of the heart due to sin can give rise to physical ailments too. The sensation of pain in the bones is used to express the depth of anguish and is linked with unforgiven sin and divine judgment.

David was miserable for a long time Why was he miserable? He had a guilty conscience because he had not confessed his sin. That is the same reason we are unhappy when we sin. But God loves us and wants us to be happy.

We can tell a person by the health of his countenance by looking at the eyes. We will be happy when we have a clear conscience by confessing our sin. David needed help to admit his sin and deal with it.

Our Lord was doing just that for the good of His church in Pergamum. May we learn the lesson of yielding to God in contrition of heart and repentance when we have sinned. Amen.
