Revelation 8:12; Natural Lights Smitten
Revelation 8:12 And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise.
The sun and the moon were smitten that their light is curtailed for a third of its useful time to provide light by day and by night respectively. The third part of light emitted from stars is also dimmed. In other words, there were perhaps 4 hour periods of complete darkness when the sun and moon were smitten.
The psalmist says in Psalm 27:1 A Psalm of David. The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
When we have God as our light, every darkness is turned to day! God provides the needed wisdom to see us through the trials. The world is oblivious of the comfort that God imparts to His people. Fear is replaced by faith when we have strength with God.
It is frightening to face the wrath of God. However, like the ten plagues God sent to Egypt, there was a gradual increase in intensity to highlight the coming severity for not submitting to Him.
When we will not receive God through His Christ for salvation, it is a fearful awaiting of judgment. The prospect of eternal torment in hellfire. What a frightening prospect.
For every trial, God is our sure refuge. God’s people find solace in Him – Psalm 27:2-5 When the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell. Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this willI be confident. One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to inquire in his temple. For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock.
But to be at enmity with God is most unwise! May God help us to be on the Lord’s side. Amen.
