Revelation 11:13; A Great Earthquake, City Fell, Men Slain
Revelation 11:13 And the same hour was there a great earthquake, and the tenth part of the city fell, and in the earthquake were slain of men seven thousand: and the remnant were affrighted, and gave glory to the God of heaven.
At the time of the resurrection of the witnesses, there was a great earthquake in Jerusalem that impacted 1/10 of the city with 7000 men killed as a result.
We recall the time of Christ’s death and resurrection there was also earthquakes in Jerusalem. There was a great earthquake just 2 days before on Friday at 3pm when Jesus gave up the ghost. Jesus died. The Bible tells us, “And the veil of the temple was rent in twain from top to the bottom; and the earth did quake and the rocks rent” (Matt. 27:51). This was significant. No longer do we have to bring animals for sacrifice to receive forgiveness for our sins. The rending of the veil proclaimed the termination and passing away of the ceremonial law, the opening of the way of salvation for all mankind through the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross. When we have sinned, we can confess our sins to the Father in Jesus’ Name and He will forgive our sins and cleansed us from all unrighteousness.
This second earthquake was equally great three days later. The first proclaimed the death of Christ, the second His resurrection from the dead.
Matthew 24:2 And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.
It was a frightening scene. There must be great movements on resurrection ground as the earthquake shook the tomb. Great fear fell upon the guards of the tomb. Remember they were specially appointed to guard the sealed tomb so that nothing can go in or come out! Their very lives are in danger for failing to guard the tomb. When the women arrived on the early hours of that Sunday morning the stone was rolled away. There was no corpse there. Then we read three startled women were even more surprised because an angel spoke to them.
Matthew 28:5 And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified.
Matthew 28:6 He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.
The stone was not tolled back so Jesus could get out. But others could get in and see that Jesus had indeed risen from the dead. Just as He had promised.
