Revelation 14:8; That Great City
Revelation 14:8 And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.
Cain, the first-born of Adam and Eve, who rebelled God, went from the presence of the LORD and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden. And Cain built a city … (Genesis 4:16-17). He named the city after his son Enoch. This is the ungodly Enoch. It was a city built for Cain’s glory.
Men became worse when the devil defiled the human seed – Genesis 6:1-5 And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose. And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years. There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown. And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
The descendants of Cain became very wicked, they possessed great powers energized by the devil.
God judged the world with the global flood during Noah’s time. However, evil was carried into the post-flood world especially through the descendants of Ham.
Genesis 10:6-12 And the sons of Ham; Cush, and Mizraim, and Phut, and Canaan. And the sons of Cush; Seba, and Havilah, and Sabtah, and Raamah, and Sabtecha: and the sons of Raamah; Sheba, and Dedan. And Cush begat Nimrod: he began to be a mighty one in the earth. He was a mighty hunter before the LORD: wherefore it is said, Even as Nimrod the mighty hunter before the LORD. And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, and Erech, and Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar. Out of that land went forth Asshur, and builded Nineveh, and the city Rehoboth, and Calah, And Resen between Nineveh and Calah: the same is a great city.
The city of Babel built by Nimrod, the first world dominant leader, energized by the evil one. It was at Babel and its famous tower built to rival their Creator God in the land of Shinar
Genesis 11:1-9 And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech. And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there. And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them throughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter. And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded. And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech. So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city. Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.
The word “Babel” means “confusion”; Babel (i.e. Babylon), including Babylonia and the Babylonian empire:—Babel, Babylon. [Strong’s Dictionary]
God confounded the language of the people so that they cannot understand one another and so they were scattered. The plan for world dominance without God was thwarted.
This is the end-time Babylon where the One World Dictator the Antichrist will rise and rule. Here is God pronouncing judgment just as He did at the Tower of Babel.
God again predicts its destruction.
Psalm 2:2-5 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us. He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision. Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure.
In vain, men rebel against their Creator.
Warning is given to those who still have a chance to repent to come back to Him.
Gracious words beckoning us to repent where we have fallen penned by the late Rev Timothy Tow (sung to a Korean tune).
Oh come unto the Lord,
Oh come back to the Lord,
Our Lord is waiting for Your return both night and day;
He is anxiously waiting for you
With His doors kept open wide,
As if He is waiting in the night,
For His lost child to come back home.
Amen.
