Lord’s Day, Vol. 8 No. 51

(1) Family Bible Camp 2020

Praise God for His grace to gather the church for our annual Family Bible Camp from 16 – 18 December. This year’s camp is special because it is held during the Christmas season. Our theme is, therefore “Unto Us a Child is Born” (Isaiah 9:6).

In the blessed words of the Apostle John, this is the glad tiding, declared in 1 John 4:14 And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.

We traced from Scriptures the testimony of our Saviour’s birth from prophecy to fulfilment, seeing and wondering and rejoicing at the greatness and mystery of the incarnation, Immanuel, God with us (Isaiah 7:14).

The angel said to the shepherds, “Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger” (Luke 2:10-12).

These messages are undergirded with the prayer that it may minister comfort and

joy in the minds and hearts of God’s people in a trying season for His church subsisting in this nation and the world. Indeed, we have a triumphant message that must be whole-heartedly embraced and warmly shared so that God’s blessing may overflow to others that He sends our way.

  •  His Name is Jesus  – The Saviour of the World – Isaiah 9:6a; Matthew 1:21 cf. 18-25; Luke 2:21; 1 John 4:14-15
  •  His Unique Birth – Matthew 1:18-25; Isaiah 7:14; Genesis 3:15
  •  His Humble Place of Birth – Bethlehem – Micah 5:2; Luke 2:1-7
  •  His Heralders (1) – Angels and Shepherds – Luke 2:8-20
  •  His Heralders (2) – The Star and Wise Men – Matthew 2:1-12
  •  His Mission of Peace – Isaiah 9:6b-7

The last prayer meeting for the year was held on Wednesday night at camp. Thank God for the two morning devotions Lucas Lek shared from Galatians 6:14 entitled “Glorying in the Cross of Christ”. There were 39 campers gathering over the three days. Thank the Lord for a blessing time of spiritual refreshing.

(2) Reprint of Revival Hymns and Choruses (RHC)

In December 2013, 1000 copies of the church hymnal “Revival Hymns and Choruses” complied by our late Pastoral Advisor Rev Dr Tow Siang Hwa were printed and distributed. This year in December 2020, another 1000 copies were  printed to replenish the copies already in circulation. Thank God for granting us the copy right needed to make this reprint.

The choice hymnal for many Bible-Presbyterian (B-P) churches and even some non-B-P Churches in Singapore has been and still is the Revival Hymns and Choruses (RHC) compiled by the late Rev. Dr. Tow Siang Hwa, our Pastoral Advisor.

This hymnal is recommended for continued use in our church for both corporate worship and family and personal devotions. There are 567 hymns in the index with a rich collection of old English and other great hymns. One distinct feature of this hymnal is the compilation of choruses sung during Dr. John Sung’s revival of 1935, the Chinese root of the Bible-Presbyterian Church in Singapore. This is unique to the RHC. The

spiritual richness of these choruses captured the spirit of that revival.

BHBPC would make available new hardcopies for our members and visitors and for like-minded churches. We urge you to get your personal copy for corporate, family and personal spiritual enrichment if you do not already have one.

There is much spiritual benefit in memorizing lyrics of hymns as Apostle Paul taught in Ephesians 5:19, “Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.” Having a personal copy would facilitate your spiritual progress.

Especially in this season where assembling for church is restricted, the believer with the Bible and hymnal is able to worship God, nonetheless. New copies are made available for you and your family and friends.

Do contact us to get copies for yourselves. This is a non-profit spiritual endeavour. May His Name be praised. Amen.

Your lovingly,

Pastor Lek Aik Wee
