Lord’s Day, Vol. 9 No. 24

Delivered!

Psalm 34:4 (KJV) I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.

Are there fears in your life? The LORD is able to help. We are exhorted to seek Him. For He hears our cries as we resort to Him.

We shall examine firstly what are our fears. Secondly, we are exhorted to come to God in prayer. Thirdly, we are assured that He hears our prayers. Fourthly, we are delivered when God puts faith in our hearts to allay our fears.

  • Articulating Our Fears

Our fears are those unresolved matters in our hearts that are wont of a solution. It troubles our heart. It can be our safety and security, it can be our sanctity and sanity. The prospect of harm and danger coming upon us or the people we love can disturb our peace. Our unconfessed sins can cause lingering fears in our hearts that causes us to want to hide from God as did Adam and Eve after the fall. Our fears can come from disturbance from persons or from the environment. When fears come, they press hard upon our hearts, choking us with trepidation and palpitation. Our minds can feel that we are falling over the cliff. It takes away the peace and restfulness of the heart. The heart is in turmoil. It is important we understand the matter that is bothering us.

(2) Come to God In Prayer
Seeking the LORD through prayer is primarily through His Word. It is from God’s Word that we find Him. Aided by God’s Word, our Bibles opened, we pray.

Psalm 34:6 (KJV) This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles.

We resorted to God because we are at a loss what to do, how to go forward. In the state of poverty, in contrition of heart, the thirsty soul flies to the Fountain of refreshing.

Psalm 34:18 (KJV) The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.

The afflicted soul knows the place of solace at the throne of grace and therefore abides and tarries there.

Psalm 34:9 (KJV) O fear the LORD, ye his saints: for there is no want to them that fear him.

It is God’s fear that drives us to our knees, allowing God to show us with His blessings.

(3) Assurance of Answered Prayer

Having cast our burdens upon the LORD, we can be assured that He heard us – I sought the LORD, and He heard me.

Psalm 34:10 (KJV) The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger: but they that seek the LORD shall not want any good thing.

Psalm 34:15 (KJV) The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry.

The supplicant comes with confession of sins and an understanding of our general unworthiness even to be heard. Unless the LORD would help, there is no other help.

Psalm 34:22 (KJV) The LORD redeemeth the soul of his servants: and none of them that trust in him shall be desolate.

Our fears allayed, faith undergirding our hearts, we receive the assurance of help – Only Jesus, only Jesus, only He can satisfy, all my burdens are turned to blessings when I know my LORD is nigh.

Assurance of God’s care for us brings strength to our hearts that He will certainly protect us.

Psalm 34:5 (KJV) They looked unto him, and were lightened: and their faces were not ashamed.

This is the testimony of saints through the ages time and time again. The word “lightened” means shine or be radiant, to flow or stream. Light dispelling the darkness of our fears, the refreshing stream of God’s presence and power nourishes our souls with confidence and

Christ’s imputed righteousness. This is the glory of God manifested in our hearts by faith.

(4) Deliverance

How does God deliver us? By His power as He directs our deliverance from His throne room by His Spirit – Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts (Zechariah 4:6).

Psalm 34:7 (KJV) The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them.

Psalm 34:19-20 (KJV) Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all. 20 He keepeth all his bones: not one of them is broken.

Amidst suffering and affliction, the LORD keeps and blesses His people to accomplish His purpose and glory as we look to Him. The LORD is ever with His people. As we look in His Word, we are instructed, finding wisdom for life – none that trust in Him shall be desolate.

Psalm 34:8 (KJV) O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.

Let us resort to come to the LORD. Let not our fears overwhelm us. Let us resort to trust Him. May the trials of life mould us that we may conform to the image of Christ. Amen.

Yours lovingly,
