Psalm 89:7 Deep Reverence in the Worship of God
Psalm 89:7 (KJV) God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, and to be had in reverence of all them that are about him.
The word “feared” means “to cause to tremble” with the word “God” translated from “El” alluding to the terrible power of God brings the picture of deep reverence, awe and trembling in the sight of God when we approach Him in holy worship.
Hebrews 12:21 (KJV) And so terrible was the sight, that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake:)
This was also the prophet Isaiah’s experience when he was brought to the throne room of God, called into the Lord’s service. He trembled at the sight of the holiness of God realizing his own sinfulness as he recalled the recent death of Judah’s prideful king Uzziah.
The judgment from God came swiftly upon Uzziah, being struck instantly with leprosy for intruding into the holy place of the temple to offer sacrifices, a role reserved for the priest of God.
Isaiah 6:1-4 (KJV) In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory. And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke.
The word “reverence” means “to stand in awe”. When God’s people are gathered before Him in worship, let us come before Him reverently. Let our thoughts be focused on our worship of Him in thanksgiving and devotion. May our thoughts be not wandering whilst in the sanctuary of God. It brings dishonour to Him. Let our mobile devices be put to silent or mode or switched off so that it will not be a distraction to ourselves and other worshippers.
May the Lord bless our worship for His honour and glory. Amen.
