Proverbs 8:34 The Secret to Godliness

Proverbs 8:34 (KJV)  Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors.

The exhortation of our Father in heaven to His children is hereby prescribed – Proverbs 8:32-33 (KJV)  Now therefore hearken unto me, O ye children: for blessed are they that keep my ways. Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not.

The believer is here exhorted to be awakened and not be sleepy to hear the word of warning and instruction just as the priest who waits at the door of the tabernacle for “assured blessing” (Bridges).

Exodus 29:42 (KJV)  This shall be a continual burnt offering throughout your generations at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation before the LORD: where I will meet you, to speak there unto thee.

Hearken to the voice of the Lord speaking with “unwearied diligence and patient expectation” (Bridges), be not as the superficial professor who excuses himself because he is weary – Malachi 1:13 (KJV)  Ye said also, Behold, what a weariness is it! and ye have snuffed at it, saith the LORD of hosts; and ye brought that which was torn, and the lame, and the sick; thus ye brought an offering: should I accept this of your hand? saith the LORD.

Watching daily at the gates and waiting at the posts of the door may be a disciplined and rigorous process but it is worth the sentry work.

Blessing is pronounced upon those who wait upon God at His Word meditating upon His promises, finding Him most faithful to help.

Let us realize the watching and waiting upon our God is worth the effort for therein is the secret to godliness. Amen.
