Psalm 119:24 Delighting in God’s Word
Psalm 119:24 (KJV) Thy testimonies also are my delight and my counsellers.
The testimonies of God are His laws given as divine testimonies or solemn charges. The testimony of God is also a witness – as the testimony of the Ten Commandments on the tables as a solemn divine charge from God, generally speaking of God’s written Word.
We can appreciate the psalmist’s resolve to delight in God’s Word. He delights in reading his Bible because the Bible gives him counsel. He finds God’s guidance through His Word.
The context may help us see the psalmist predicament and how he needed God’s Word to guide and strengthen him.
Psalm 119:17-23 (KJV) GIMEL. Deal bountifully with thy servant, that I may live, and keep thy word. Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law. I am a stranger in the earth: hide not thy commandments from me. My soul breaketh for the longing that it hath unto thy judgments at all times. Thou hast rebuked the proud that are cursed, which do err from thy commandments. Remove from me reproach and contempt; for I have kept thy testimonies. Princes also did sit and speak against me: but thy servant did meditate in thy statutes.
Delighting in God’s Word gives the psalmist the strength to do the will of God against the tide of the world upon him.
The word “delight” means “enjoyment”. May God’s people find true enjoyment by meditating upon His Word. Amen.
