Psalm 61:4 Abiding and Trusting
Psalm 61:4 (KJV) I will abide in thy tabernacle for ever: I will trust in the covert of thy wings. Selah.
The way of God for His people is that they may dwell with Him and He in them. The psalmist has a conviction that he brought to the fore – I will abide in thy tabernacle forever. The dwelling of God with His people, Israel, was well demonstrated in the building of the Tabernacle and the Temple, providing the visible presence of God.
When Christ came, He fulfilled what the Tabernacle and Temple were feeble representations. When Jesus came, God in human flesh, God dwelled or tabernacle with men. When Christ completed His atoning work for our sins, He was ascended to heaven to be seated at the right hand of the Father. The Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Christ came to dwell with us so that His disciples were not alone. He was with them.
God’s people are to trust in God’s care for them through the ages as He reveals Himself to us culminating in the revelation of Christ. We are constantly under the covert of His wings, a picture of His care for us, a picture we are familiar with. The care of the majestic wing fowls for their young. We are exhorted not to wander but to abide. Amen.
