Hebrews 2:18 Able to Help
Hebrews 2:18 (KJV) For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.
“To succour” is “to aid, to relieve”. The writer speaks of how Christ was tempted at all points, yet without sin. He Himself hath suffered being tempted. In His humanity, the Lord understood what it meant to be tempted for He was sorely tempted. At the weakest point, humanly speaking, after he was an hungered, forty days and forty nights, the devil came to tempt Him.
Our Lord overcame the three temptations hurled by the devil in the wilderness – the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life. He, therefore, has the power and knowledge to overcome Satan. We are to come to Him for help.
Our text tells us that He is able to help them that are tempted. It is a statement of victory, a promise of relief, the testimony of assurance and strength for the tempted. Let us, therefore, come to Jesus, and call to Him in our time of distress. He will certainly be there for us. Amen.
