Luke 5:4-6 At Thy Word
Luke 5:4-6 (KJV) Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net. And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake.
The word of Christ has power. It enabled Peter to catch a whole net full of fish. He was obedient to his Master’s instructions and reversed the situation of the empty nets just the night before.
Luke 5:7-8 (KJV) And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.
Peter realized that the Lord Jesus is indeed the Christ. He saw that Jesus is God. He acknowledged his sinfulness in the sight of Jesus.
Luke 5:9 (KJV) For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken:
Luke 5:10 (KJV) And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men.
Was it a prediction of the blessings of Peter’s future work of soul-winning? Was it an affirmation that Jesus will take care of Peter as he launches forth with the gospel work? It certainly helps Peter to see that Jesus is the Son of God and in Him is everlasting life. Amen.
