1 Thessalonians 5:8 Let Us Who Are of the Day
1 Thessalonians 5:8 (KJV) But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.
For the believers in Christ, we are children of the day, children of light and not of darkness. God has marvellously delivered us from darkness to receive the light of the gospel. Therefore, as children of the day, we are exhorted to be sober.
To be sober is to be watchful, not drunken, but awake and alert. And to be spiritually protected by having on our spiritual armour. Here is highlighted two pieces of the armour, the breastplate of faith and protects the believer the fiery darts of the evil one. This piece of armour covered the front of the soldier’s body, from the neck to the upper part of the thighs. It protected the vital organs. I believe that Paul is referring here to the righteousness of Christ which we receive when we trust in Him.There is no way to get righteousness except by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. He is our righteousness. We rest on the finished work of Christ.
Romans 1:17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.
The helmet protects the head, the brain and the ears. The head is important, and we need the helmet of salvation to protect it. To protect it against the input of trash from the world that cause fear, disapointment, discouragements to our hearts. We have an assurance of salvation whatever the external state of the world and live may be. Amen.
