Hebrews 2:17-18 A Merciful and Faithful High Priest
Hebrews 2:17-18 (KJV) Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people. For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.
The work of the High Priest in Israel is to be a mediator between God and His people. The priest served from thirty to fifty years of age. The setting up of the worship in the Tabernacle points to Christ, the Son of God, who is fully man and yet fully God.
After Christ has made reconciliation for the sins of the people, by the offering of Himself upon the altar, He ascended to heaven forty days after His resurrection from the dead to sit at the right hand of the Father in heaven. Our Lord Jesus Christ understands the trials and temptations of His people because He was Himself tested, and was victorious!
His work as our Advocate and Mediator before the Father is that He might plead the mercy of God upon His people and this work He discharged with utmost faithfulness, being our eternal, unchangeable High Priest.
Let us, therefore, come to Him and find comfort, wisdom and our all-sufficiency through every trial and in every temptation of life. Amen.
