1 Peter 4:7 Watch Unto Prayer

1 Peter 4:7 (KJV)  But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.

Watchfulness is characterized by prayer, a constant and consistent communion with God. The indwelling Holy Spirit aids us in our communion with the Father.

The Apostle Paul also articulated this thought well in Romans 8:22-23 (KJV)  For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.

Christ in the depth of His suffering sets for us the example. He instructed His disciples to watch and pray – Matthew 26:40-41 (KJV) And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour? Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

He demonstrated consistent watchfulness and prayer in the time of trial- Matthew 26:42-47 (KJV)  He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done. And he came and found them asleep again: for their eyes were heavy. And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words. Then cometh he to his disciples, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise, let us be going: behold, he is at hand that doth betray me. And while he yet spake, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and elders of the people.

May His church be watchful and pray for the end of all things is at hand. Amen.
