Lamentations 3:22-23 It is of the LORD’S Mercies
Lamentations 3:22-23 (KJV) It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.
As prophet Jeremiah contemplated life, he thanked the LORD for His mercies, that is, His goodness and kindness, that have kept him and His compassions or tender mercies. The word “compassion” is literally the word for “womb” or “bowels”, the seat of warm and tender emotions. That’s where the mother keeps the unborn baby by the blood supplied by the umbilical cord to nourish and strengthen the child.
He extols the LORD for His faithfulness – Great is Thy Faithfulness, in supplying untold goodness and kindness to His people. Each day when we awake, we feel the breath in our nostrils, how we must come with grateful acknowledgment of God’s unfailing compassion.
Jeremiah described His God as a fountain of living waters. Not dead but living.
Our LORD’S compassion never runs dry, the poor sinner must run and flee to Him to be nourished each time. As mentioned, the word “compassion” is a noun that originates from the word which means “womb” to describe motherly love and the verb is “love”, the love that is like the security of the unborn child nourished in the mother’s womb. The child is simply helpless.
When we acknowledge our utter disability God will show us His exceeding ability through us. These words of hope are the experience of Jeremiah and he shared with us how he was rejuvenated because the Fountain of Living Waters has nourished him. Amen.
