Matthew 6:33 But Seek Ye First the Kingdom of God
Matthew 6:33 (KJV) But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
The adversative “but” provided the contrast that our Lord Jesus seeks to point out to His hearers to direct them to eternally profitable labour. The labour for the kingdom of God brings with it all temporal things that one might need. Our Lord assures His people, all these things shall be added unto you.
The exhortation by Christ “to seek” first the kingdom of God is a command to continually put God first in our lives. It is a plain command to flee every idolatry especially the money god “Mammon”.
What does it means to seek His righteousness? The psalmist articulated when he said in Psalm 27:4 (KJV) One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to inquire in his temple. Amen.
