Jeremiah 31:3 I Have Loved Thee With An Everlasting Love

Jeremiah 31:3 (KJV) The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee.

The LORD’s love for His people is an everlasting love. It does not dim or become weary but ever strong and comforting. It is undergirded by His active seeking out of His own for His glory to their good.

A most reasonable thought as we contemplate the Person of our LORD and the magnificence of the outworking of His love. The lovingkindness of God speaks of His loyalty, faithfulness and goodness towards His people. This word translated “lovingkindness” expresses the basic character of God, the concept of faithfulness, steadfast love, or more generally kindness is represented by this word “Hesed” in the Hebrew.

Deuteronomy 7:9 (KJV) Know therefore that the LORD thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations;

Translated “mercy” of God as the superior party in a relationship involves “deliverance and protection as a responsible keeping of faith with another with whom one is in a relationship”, with the moral responsibility resting upon the superior party, who is God Himself. Amen.
