Psalm 119:18 Open Thou Mine Eyes

Psalm 119:18 (KJV) Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.

The psalmist prayed that the LORD would help him to understand the Scripture, to behold wondrous things of His law. Indeed, as we pray the Holy Spirit shows us the truth of God’s law – 1 Corinthians 2:11-13 (KJV) For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. 13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

The Hebrew word “Open” literally means to be naked; then to make naked, to uncover, to disclose, to reveal. To understand the truth for what the LORD had in mind for him to understand.

The Word of God is divinely given and therefore is divinely understood through prayer and quiet meditation. As the psalmist waits upon the LORD to understand heavenly wisdom, there is an exciting prospect that fills his heart. May this be our prayer too. Amen.
