John 14:1 Let Not Your Heart Be Troubled
John 14:1 (KJV) Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.
Our Lord has been betrayed and His incarceration was coming. He was preparing His disciples for it. He saw the troubled hearts of His disciples and sought to comfort and strengthen them. The word “troubled” means “agitated as the water in a pool by a tempest”. It may be observed that strong, especially painful feeling like anxiety, and sorrow produces violent movement of the heart.
The agitated heart is therefore troubled, signifying the restless painful emotions the mind goes through, when there is a premonition of evil or when evil is experienced. The disciples were anxious, sorrowful, and fearful.
The disciples had been convinced in their hearts and their minds that Jesus is the Christ and had cast their lot with Him, at His command forsaken all and followed Him. They knew surely He was the Christ, the Son of God, the great Deliverer promised to their forefathers.
Our Lord urged them to faith, trusting God, believing that He is indeed the Christ, who is God. And God can do anything but fail. They are to trust in Him. So must we. Amen.
