Galatians 5:22-23 But the Fruit of the Spirit
Galatians 5:22-23 (KJV) But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
The Apostle Paul contrasted the works of the flesh to the fruit of the Spirit so that the believer can distinguish between godliness and ungodliness – Galatians 5:19-21 (KJV) Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, 21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
There are seventeen descriptions of the ungodliness contrasted with nine spiritual fruit helping the believer to seek the Lord’s mercy so that spirit fruit may be borne in his life. The spirit’s fruit is a heavenly endowment. It is a cultivated fruit as the believer yields himself to walk in the spirit, he shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh – Galatians 5:16-17 (KJV) This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
The exhortation is that the believer would have spiritual victory living a life of godliness bearing the Spirit’s fruit, “Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.” Galatians 5:1 (KJV) Amen.
